The original Jonny Quest animated TV series ran only 26 episodes from September 1964 to March 1965. Objectively, the animation isn’t very good and the plots are far-fetched. But the series has a strange charm and developed a very strong cult following.
The central characters are brilliant scientist Dr. Benton Quest, his son Jonny, friend Hadji, bodyguard Race Bannon, and dog Bandit. Six of the 26 episodes featured a submarine in some way.
“The Mystery of the Lizard Men” (episode #1) – A foreign power has a secret base that is developing a laser weapon. The base is in a submarine parked below a shipwreck in the Sargasso Sea in the North Atlantic. Dr. Quest uses a mirror to destroy the weapon.
“Artic Splashdown” (episode #2) – An experimental U.S. rocket goes down in the Arctic. A foreign submarine crew races Dr. Quest and his team on an American icebreaker to recover the rocket. The villains recover the rocket but it blows up destroying them.
“Skull and Double Crossbones” (episode #11) – The Quest team is in the Caribbean doing marine research, using a one-man wet submarine. A gang of pirates is also in the area looking for sunken treasure, and capture the Quests. Bandit gets tossed overboard but is rescued by a British Coast Guard vessel, and the Quests are saved.
“The Dreadful Doll” (episode #12) – While researching marine biology in the Caribbean, Dr. Quest encounters a fake witch doctor who is using voodoo to protect a secret submarine base that is being constructed by a foreign power. Quest uses a diving bell. Race hijacks the villain’s submarine and torpedos the base.
“Pirates from Below” (episode #18) – Dr. Quest is developing a new tracked submarine-vehicle in the Quest compound in Florida. Foreign agents try to steal the invention. They have a standard submarine but also have torpedo-armed one man submarines that attack the Quest submersible. Luckily, Dr. Quest’s invention is equipped with articulated arms with grasping claws that destroy the attacking subs.
“The House of Seven Gargoyles” (episode #23) – The Quest team goes to a gothic castle in Norway to assist a professor who is working on an anti-gravity device. A foreign power has a submarine lurking in a nearby fjord and uses a dwarf disguised as one of the building gargoyles to try and steal the invention. The villains on the submarine try to shoot Benton and Race while they’re in a helicopter, but the gunfire brings a huge ice sheet down upon the submarine, killing them.
