“Step-by-Step Instructions for Making a Custom AI Assistant Using OpenAI GPT” on the Pure AI Web Site

I contributed content to an article titled “Step-by-Step Instructions for Making a Custom AI Assistant Using OpenAI GPT” on the Pure AI web site. See https://pureai.com/Articles/2024/01/25/create-gpt.aspx.

Until very recently, creating a custom AI assistant that has unique knowledge was an extremely difficult task that required software developers with expert coding skills. Several weeks ago, OpenAI released an easy-to-use web tool to create a custom AI assistant, with no coding required.

This is the result of the AI assistant. It is a chess history assistant named Chesster. The assistant was fed a document that described a hypothetical “Knight Hole” chess trap. When asked about “Knight Hole”, the assistant uses the custom information to answer.

The article walks through the creation of a custom “chess history” assistant. There are two prerequisites. You must have a Google (Gmail) account or Microsoft account. I recommend Google because it has worked better for me. And you will need to subscribe to an OpenAI “Plus” account using a credit card for $20 per month. But you can cancel the subscription at any time.

The field of AI is moving with blazing speed. The OpenAI web tool to create custom AI assistants is a significant step forward. I fully expect many more no-coding-required tools for creating assistants to be released quickly.

Custom AI assistants can sometimes seem like magic. Here are three memorable (to me anyway) comedy movies that feature a magician’s assistant.

Left: “Leprechaun 3” (1995) tells the story of an evil leprechaun in Las Vegas seeking a magic coin. The hero’s girlfriend Tammy, works at the Lucky Shamrock Casino as a magician’s assistant. This movie has some very funny scenes. My grade = B.

Center: In the rather obscure “It Happened Tomorrow” (1944), a young man in the late 1890s finds he can get hold of the next day’s newspaper. His love interest is a magician’s assistant in a somewhat shady act. Mildly amusing. My grade = C.

Right: “The Incredible Burt Wonderstone” (2013) centers around a has-been Las Vegas magician, his partner, and their assistant, in their efforts to become a relevant act again. This could have been a very good movie, and it does have some hilarious scenes, but overall the movie has an inconsistent tone and weak editing. My grade = C.
