Major League Baseball All-Time Vegetable Team – Trey Cabbage is Number One

I went to a Seattle Mariners baseball game last night with my good friend Jim M and his wife Aurora. Jim is a huge baseball fan and loves baseball statistics.

The Mariners played the Houston Astros. Jim and I both noticed that, in addition to having perhaps the ugliest uniforms in all of baseball, the Astros had a player with the interesting name of Trey Cabbage.

This morning I spent some time at http://www.baseball-reference.com to put together an all-time Major League Baseball Vegetable Team:

1. Trey Cabbage (1997-), Astros
2. Billy Bean (1964-), Tigers, Dodgers, Padres
3. Hap Collard (1898-1968), Indians, Phillies
4. Yam Yaryan (1892-1964), White Sox
5. Walker James Cress (1917-1996) , Reds
6. Gene Leek (1936-), Indians, Angels
7. Jose Lima (1972-2010), Tigers, Astros, Royals, Dodgers, Mets
8. Don Pepper (1943-), Tigers
9. Bob Sprout (1941-), Angels (one game!)
10. Kyle Garlick (1992-), Diamondbacks, Dodgers, Phillies, Twins
11. Fred Romaine Applegate (1879-1968), Philadelphia Athletics
12. Ricardo Pinto (1994-), Phillies, Rays

Here are seven players who played in MLB minor leagues, and get honorable mention:

Christian Turnipseed
Kale Emshoff
Russ Olive
Alfonso Choy
James Chard
Joe Greens
Frank Onion

I love old electromechanical games. There were dozens of baseball games produced by many different manufacturers in the 1930s through the 1970s. Here are two I liked to play. Left: Williams “Pinch-Hitter” (1959) features Williams signature upper playing field where cutout men run around the diamond. Right: Williams “Upper Deck” (1973) is similar but has a single ramp that spans the width of the game surface, instead of three separate ramps.
