Gradient boosting regression (GBR) is a common machine learning technique to predict a single numeric value. The technique combines many small decision trees (typically 100 or 200) to produce a final prediction. One morning before work, I figured I’d put together a quick demo of GBR from semi-scratch using Python. By “semi-scratch” I mean the top-level MyGradientBoostingRegressor class is from-scratch but it calls the built-in scikit library DecisionTreeRegressor (as opposed to calling a from-scratch decision tree implementation).
A short search of the Internet led me to an excellent resource at towardsdatascience.com/all-you-need-to-know-about-gradient-boosting-algorithm-part-1-regression-2520a34a502 by a Tomonori Masui. The explanation of gradient boosting regression was spot-on, and the demo code was clear and clean.
I modified the reference code by changing a few variable names (forcing me to fully understand the code) and adding a few things. To cut to the chase, the main part of the output of my demo program is:
Begin gradient boost regression semi-scratch Loading synthetic train (200), test (40) data Done First three X predictors: [-0.1660 0.4406 -0.9998 -0.3953 -0.7065] [ 0.0776 -0.1616 0.3704 -0.5911 0.7562] [-0.9452 0.3409 -0.1654 0.1174 -0.7192] First three y targets: 0.48400 0.15680 0.80540 Setting n_estimators = 200 Setting max_depth = 2 Setting min_samples = 2 Setting lrn_rate = 0.0500 Training model Done Accuracy train (within 0.10): 0.8950 Accuracy test (within 0.10): 0.7000 Predicting for: [[-0.1660 0.4406 -0.9998 -0.3953 -0.7065]] Predicted y = 0.4746 End demo
The demo data is synthetic. There are five predictor variables with values between -1 and +1. The target values to predict are between 0.0 and 1.0. The synthetic data was generated by a 5-10-1 neural network with random weights and biases. Therefore, the data has an underlying, but complex, structure which can, in theory, be predicted. There are 200 training items and 40 test items.
I implemented an accuracy() function that scores a prediction as correct if it’s within a specified percentage of the true target y value. I specified 10% as an arbitrary percentage to use.
I ran the synthetic data through the built-in scikit GradientBoostingRegressor module. Using the same model parameters — n_estimators = 200, max_depth = 2, min_samples = 2, lrn_rate = 0.0500 — the built-in scikit module produced identical results.
There are several variations of gradient boosting regression libraries available. XGBoost (“Extreme Gradient Boost”) and LightGBM are two I’ve used.
Good fun and a good way to start my day.

I enjoy creating machine learning systems from scratch. I know a few artists and they tell me they enjoy creating their art from scratch. For me, one of the most memorable sets of artwork from my youth was the “Civil War News” trading cards. They were produced by the Topps card company in the early 1960s and were hugely popular with children, but were not-so-popular with our parents. They came in a pack of five cards and sold for five cents. There were 88 cards in total.
The front of each card featured an image of an event — usually a gruesome death of some sort. The back of each card described the event in the form of a simulated newspaper article. Shown here are #21 “Painful Death”, #20 “Death Fall”, and #72 “The Cannon’s Victim”. The back of “Death Fall” reads:
Fair Oaks, Va. – May 30, 1862
A daring balloonist was struck by a cannon shell and plunged
to his death in flames, over the battlefield today. Northern
observation balloons were hovering over Fair Oaks to get an
aerial view of the combat. Watching from the air, the North
hopes to spot mistakes in military strategy and not let them
reoccur. The Confederate Army suffered a severe blow too, when
General Johnston was badly injured during the battle. Johnston
was struck in the shoulder and chest by shells. Early medical
reports say that Johnston will be cut of action for several
months. Both the North and the South are beginning to realize
that this war will not end in the near future. Many more will
die before the last shot has been fired.
My younger brother Roger was an avid collector of these cards and they gave him a life-long love of history.
Demo program. Replace the “lt” (less than) in the accuracy() function with Boolean operator symbol. My blog editor chokes on symbols.
